ePortfolio practice in the higher education: The Dutch experience

ePortfolio practice in higher Education: the Dutch Experience Marij Veugelers (University of Amsterdam/SURF NL Portfolio) and Wijnand Aalderink (University of Groningen) In this presentation over ten years of ePortfolio project experience obtained by the SURF Foundation in the Netherlands is showcased by presenting models, research outcomes, lessons learned and future developments. The NL Portfolio special interest group has been facilitating sustainable development on ePortfolio within higher education in a coherent way in order to stimulate life long learning of individual students. ePortfolio experts and project leaders continue to work together in the context of NL Portfolio to combine, share and expand experience. For more information, please visit http://www.surfspace.nl/ Marij Veugelers is Projectmanager Portfolio Implementation for the IT in Education Department at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (since 2000) and responsible for educational implementation at the eleven schools that have been using an e-portfolio since 2001.The UvA choose for the Open Source Portfolio system as the first university in Europe. She was also project manager of the Digital University (consortium of 10 universities) Portfolio Implementation Instruments Project. The results are a toolkit for managers on the web with several new instruments. She had organized the first expert exchange meeting Portfolio UK-NL in April 2004 and the follow up meetings in 2006 Since September 2004 she is communitymanager of the Dutch Special Interest Group NL Portfolio of the SURF-Foundation for the Higher Education section in the Netherlands. She has published and presented several times in the NL and abroad (ALT 2004, EUNIS 2004, Eportfolio 2004,2006 AAHE-CRA London 2005 ,2006, EDUCAUSE 2005, Sakai 2006,2007, Handbook of Research on ePortfolios USA ) about portfolio implementation aspects. Marij’s background is educational consultant, career/student counsellor and biologist. Wijnand Aalderink (1962), having a background as a linguist, works since 1998 in the field of IT and Education. Since september 2007 he is working for the University of Groningen, where he is appointed Head of Education and Communication in the Department of Economics and Business. Apart from that Wijnand works for the SURF Foundation (Platform Organization for IT in HE) at the Dutch national level, like he has done for the last four years. For eighteen years Wijnand has been working in different roles at Windesheim University of Professional Education in the Netherlands: as teacher, advisor and manager. As program manager e-learning at Windesheim University he was responsible for different projects aiming at the development of an appropriate learning infrastructure for student-centred competence-based education. Wijnand has been the head of DigiDidact, centre of expertise for IT in Education at Windesheim for five years. Since 2006 he was installed as Manager Educational Services at Windesheim, being responsible not only for IT in Education, but also for a wide arrange of ecucational services in the university. Wijnand has published and presented several papers both in the national and international arena on topics like streaming audio and video, strategic development of corporate e-learning and e-portfolio. He has been chair of the steering group of NL Portfolio for three years, one of the special interest groups of the SURF-Foundation in the Netherlands
